Is the US prepared to Raise Human Rights?

US to raise human rights: The recent attacks on Human Rights in Kashmir have created an atmosphere of tension between the two nations. Human Rights defenders face serious threats and violence from both the government and the armed forces. However, Indian Human Rights Organizations is up to their necks to protect their people from abusive policies of the state and International Terrorism sponsored by Pakistan.

They have consistently raised the international community’s concern over the worsening human rights situation in Kashmir. Leaders of PDP (Peoples Party) in India has been repeatedly saying, “PAK government will not stop firing without a reason”. In fact, they have taken strong actions against India at the UN Human Rights Commission and other international forums. Indian government has repeatedly denied any loss of life or excessive damage caused to the Kashmir valley due to unrest.

On the other hand, Kashmir residents and human rights defenders have suffered excessive violations in their human dignity. According to United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillai said, “The situation in Kashmir is getting worse day by day. All over the country people are scared and worried about their future safety. All the people have become prey to terrorism.” According to United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Mary Robinson says “The religious freedom in India is severely challenged by government policy and by private Hindu reactionaries.

The rights to freedom of thought and expression, right to peaceful assembly and free choice of opinion, right to privacy and right to freedom of speech and expression are deeply disturbed.” All these factors have made India a major global human rights concern and US should be sensitive towards this deteriorating situation in Kashmir. President Obama has taken vital steps to improve India’s human rights record and supports the right approach of the government to bring normalcy in the Kashmir valley.

But many experts believe that it is difficult to raise human rights issues with someone as volatile as the Indian government is. According to them India is not interested in trying to promote human rights around the world, it is focused on maintaining its stranglehold on Kashmir. Moreover, New Delhi has always remained mum about the repeated UN resolutions on Kashmir and attempts to put pressure on India at the UN. This policy has made India very reluctant to take any steps to improve human rights conditions in Kashmir.

However there are some positive measures that the US could take to raise human rights issues in India. The first step would be to ensure that all human rights defenders are being treated humanely and are receiving fair trials in criminal cases. The second step would be for the government to release all political prisoners and respect freedom of expression. Thirdly India needs to take immediate action against human rights abuses in Baluchistan and elsewhere in the country. The last but not the least important step would be to lift the ban on the International Terrorism Bill.

So, if the US does not want to be constantly dependent on the Indian army to protect them then they should first learn to protect human rights and give people their basic right of fair trials. Then only India can stop civilian rights violations in Kashmir and ensure that people are enjoying full liberty and do not face any restrictions at all. However this will only happen if the Indian government starts taking serious measures to improve the condition of the people in Kashmir and stands by them despite the external pressure. It is time for the US to understand that the time for independent action by theinternational community is past, only the leadership of India can make Kashmir a peaceful state and help promote human rights in the state.
